HerShape — screen 1 of 4
HerShape is a women's fitness and nutrition app we built and shipped to Google Play — React Native on the front, FastAPI behind it, and one genuinely hard engineering problem in the middle.
The challenge
Generating a personalised week of meals and workouts with GPT-4o takes far longer than a normal HTTP request will wait. Do it inline and the app times out; do it slowly and users leave.
What we built
Plan generation runs on a Celery + Redis queue with automatic retry and exponential backoff. The app fires the job, gets an instant response, and polls for the finished plan — so nothing ever times out, and capacity scales by adding workers rather than rewriting anything.
The outcome
Live on Google Play, with coached form-by-form workouts and macro-aware meal plans generated per user, on one codebase across iOS and Android.
